Why this letter exists

Ten years of failure taught me which 20% is real.

Melatonin. Chamomile. Lavender spray. White noise machines. Every bottle on the shelf, and almost none of it moved the needle.

So I started testing properly. One change at a time, reading the trials instead of the labels, throwing out anything that only worked because I wanted it to.

It was never your fault, and it was never a discipline problem. The real fix is smaller and cheaper than they want you to believe.

The scorecard

Hack, or garbage? Pick one.

Sleepmaxxing has hundreds of millions of views, and 37% of American adults have already tried a viral sleep hack. Here is my verdict on the four you keep seeing.

Partly works

Tart cherry does carry natural melatonin, and the magnesium helps, but only in the right form. Most people reach for the cheapest one on the shelf, which is the one that does the least.

The $0.80 secret

Eat two kiwis one hour before bed.

Taipei Medical University put it through a clinical trial. Four weeks later subjects were falling asleep 35% faster, sleeping 13% longer, and waking less in the night. No influencer pushes kiwis, because there is no brand deal attached to a piece of fruit. That is exactly why I trust it.
