| Three letters this week about the afternoon, and a thread of guilt running through all of them. FROM THE INBOX Half past two and I am gone. I read the same spreadsheet row four times. Everyone says a nap would wreck my night, so I drink another coffee instead.Rachel, 51 I do lie down after lunch, and then I feel pathetic about it. My mother never napped a day in her life.Denise, 63 When I nap I go out for an hour and wake up worse than before. Thick-headed, cross, useless until teatime. So it clearly is not for me.Trish, 48 Blanket advice has done real damage here. Naps ruin your night, says every list, with no mention of length, timing or where you lie down. A ten-minute nap and an hour on the sofa are not the same intervention, and treating them as one thing is how all three of these women ended up stuck. Nobody here is lazy and nobody here is broken. Rachel, Denise and Trish have each been handed one rule for four completely different situations. Everything about a nap depends on its length, and the number that works is far smaller than the one you have been attempting. WHAT THE THREE LETTERS SHARE Sleep descends in stages, and the first of them are light. Stay under for twenty-five minutes or so and you drop into deep slow-wave sleep, which is wonderful overnight and disastrous at three in the afternoon, because being hauled out of it produces **sleep inertia**. That thick, furious, useless feeling Trish describes is not a sign that napping fails her. It is the exact signature of waking from a stage her nap was long enough to reach. Stop before the door to deep sleep opens and none of it happens. THE EVIDENCE Amber Brooks and Leon Lack at Flinders University gave volunteers afternoon naps timed to the minute at 5, 10, 20 and 30, plus a no-nap control, and tested them repeatedly afterwards (*Sleep*, 2006). The **10-minute nap** improved every measure immediately, with some benefits still present well over two hours later. Five was too short to do much. The longer two brought grogginess first, with any benefit arriving much later. Ten minutes, Trish. Not an hour, and not the twenty-five you would reach for on instinct. WHAT TO DO WITH THIS THE TEN-MINUTE CAP (FREE) Set an alarm for fifteen minutes and expect ten of sleep. That extra window covers the drifting off. Anybody convinced they cannot nap should try it anyway, because lying still with eyes closed delivers a surprising amount even when you never quite go under. THE CHAIR RULE (DENISE) Sit down for it. Do not get into your bed. A chair naturally limits how deep you go, and it keeps your bed meaning one thing only. As for feeling pathetic, half of southern Europe builds its afternoon around this and nobody there apologises for it. THE 3PM CUTOFF (RACHEL) Early afternoon only, and choose it over the third coffee. Your dip around half past two is a real circadian event rather than weakness. Ten minutes answers it without borrowing against tonight, which is precisely what a mid-afternoon coffee does. THE HOUR-LONG SIGNAL Needing an hour most days is information, not a habit to perfect. Regular long naps usually mean the night is not delivering, and the reasons for that are worth a proper conversation with a doctor rather than a better alarm. Take that pattern seriously instead of optimising around it. And one more thing... Some afternoons offer nowhere to lie down and nothing to do but push through. **Rhodiola** is the plant with the most human work behind it for exactly that state, studied in doctors on night duty and students in exam season, where it improved mental fatigue rather than producing stimulation. Soviet researchers spent decades on it and published almost none of it in English. It sits in the sports aisle now, filed under endurance, which is where interesting things go to be ignored. QUICK QUESTION Do you nap in the afternoon? [YES](mailto:Claire%20Ashton%20%3Cmeloucou@gmail.com%3E?subject=Yes%20-%20I%20Nap&body=Yes%2C%20and%20here%27s%20how%20long%20for.) [NO](mailto:Claire%20Ashton%20%3Cmeloucou@gmail.com%3E?subject=No%20-%20I%20Push%20Through&body=No%2C%20I%20push%20through%20the%20afternoon.) Sleep well,Claire Ashton |
