- Description: Sixty women, two sleep groups, one aging score. The sun damage was identical. The gap was in the part no serum is sold for.

| Somewhere in your bathroom there is a jar that cost more than a week of groceries. Retinol, peptides, ceramides, a serum for the eyes and another for the neck, and a routine you were told to cycle across the week like a training program. Sixty women went into a dermatology lab in Cleveland to have their faces scored. Half slept seven to nine hours. Half slept five or less. Both groups were measured for sun damage and for the kind of aging that comes from the inside. The sun damage came back the same in both groups. The entire gap between those two groups of faces sat in the one category the anti-aging aisle has never sold a product for. Your skin is not failing and neither is your routine. The repair shift is being sent home early. THE NIGHT SHIFT IN YOUR SKIN Almost all of your **growth hormone** is released in pulses during deep sleep, in the first stretch of the night. Growth hormone is what tells your body to rebuild tissue, and skin is tissue. New collagen, new cells, barrier repair: that work is scheduled, and it is scheduled for while you are unconscious. Cut the night short and the shift ends before the work is finished. Your barrier stays leaky, water escapes through it faster, and inflammation that should have been cleared overnight is still sitting there in the morning. That is the puffy, dull, papery face you recognize after a bad week. THE EVIDENCE Elma Baron's team at University Hospitals in Cleveland scored 60 women on a validated aging index (*Clinical and Experimental Dermatology*, 2015). Good sleepers averaged **2.2**. Poor sleepers averaged **4.4**. Twice the score. Good sleepers also repaired a damaged skin barrier 30% better over 72 hours, and cleared redness after ultraviolet exposure faster. Double the score, on the same faces, with no difference in sun exposure between them. TONIGHT, IN ORDER OF EFFORT THE FIRST 3 HOURS (FREE) Guard the front of the night, not the back. The growth hormone pulses come early, in your deepest sleep. Waking at six after a midnight bedtime costs you the repair window, while going down at ten and waking at four costs you far less of it. Not all missing hours are priced the same. THE 72-HOUR RULE Protect the three nights after anything harsh you do to your face. A peel, a strong retinol week, a laser appointment, a sunburn. The 30% recovery gap in that study was measured across 72 hours. Book those things for a stretch when you can sleep, and you have doubled what you paid for. THE MOISTURIZER TIMING FIX Put the heavy cream on before bed, not before breakfast. Your barrier loses the most water overnight, which is the one thing the industry has right. If you own one good occlusive cream and you have been using it in the morning under makeup, you have been applying it to the wrong shift. THE PILLOW SWAP ($12) Stop pressing one side of your face into cotton for eight hours. Sleep creases are real and they get less willing to spring back with every decade. A satin or silk case cuts the drag, and if the lines on one cheek are deeper than the other, you already know which side you favor. And one more thing... There is a good chance you already own a tub of **collagen peptides**, bought for your skin and stirred into coffee at eight in the morning. The trials behind it are real enough. What the tub does not mention is that the building work it supplies material for is scheduled overnight, driven by hormones that only show up in deep sleep. You have been delivering bricks to a site that closes at nine. Same scoop, different hour, and it costs you nothing to try. QUICK QUESTION Can you see a bad night on your face the next morning?
