| Three letters this week from women whose nights are broken by somebody else entirely. FROM THE INBOX Mum is in the room next door and I have the monitor on. Twice a night, every night, for two years. My doctor asked how many hours I get and seemed satisfied with the answer.Angela, 58 Alarm at half four, shower, wardrobe doors, keys. He is gone by five and I lie there until six pretending I might drop off again.Pauline, 55 On paper I get seven hours. In reality it arrives in four or five pieces and I wake up wrecked. Everyone tells me seven is fine.Yvonne, 47 One question gets asked in every clinic, every app and every magazine quiz: how many hours are you getting? Nobody has ever thought to ask the second question, which is in how many pieces. These three women are being measured with the wrong instrument. Angela, Pauline and Yvonne are not exaggerating and none of them is fragile. Their nights are being counted by a number that cannot see the problem. Hours were never the unit that mattered. Unbroken hours were, and nobody has been counting those for you. WHAT THE THREE LETTERS SHARE Sleep is not a flat state you lie in for seven hours. Your night runs in cycles of roughly ninety minutes, and you descend through the shallow stages into deep slow-wave sleep, which is where the heavy repair work gets done. Every arousal pulls you back toward the surface, and the descent has to begin again from near the top. Ten broken pieces of forty minutes will never add up to what one unbroken block delivers. Continuity is a separate ingredient from duration, and only one of the two gets measured. THE EVIDENCE Michael Bonnet woke 11 adults briefly after each minute of sleep across two consecutive nights (*Sleep*, 1985). Total sleep time fell by only about **one hour**, yet slow-wave and REM sleep all but disappeared, and next-day performance and mood collapsed. Later work by the same researcher found that arousals leaving no memory and no visible sign at all did the identical damage. Read that last sentence twice, Angela. You do not have to remember waking for it to have cost you the night. WHAT TO DO WITH THIS THE LONGEST BLOCK (FREE) Count your longest unbroken stretch instead of your hours. That single number explains more about your mornings than any total ever will. Written down, it also gives a doctor a figure that describes what is actually happening to you. THE EARLY ANCHOR (YVONNE) Put your bedtime earlier so the deep block lands before the interruptions start. Slow-wave sleep is concentrated in the earliest cycles, so a night that gets chopped from eleven onward hurts far less if it began at ten rather than midnight. Same seven hours on paper, different night entirely. THE EXIT PLAN (PAULINE) His clothes and his alarm belong in another room. Wardrobe doors, drawers and a bedside phone alarm are four separate arousals before he has even left. Clothes laid out downstairs, a watch that vibrates, and one quiet exit turns half four into something you sleep through. THE THRESHOLD (ANGELA) Set the monitor to alert you, instead of broadcasting every rustle. Most monitors have a sound-activated setting that stays silent until something crosses a threshold. Two years of listening to a sleeping woman breathe has cost you thousands of arousals you never knew you had. And one more thing... Getting woken is one problem. Failing to get back down afterwards is a second problem with a chemical explanation. Cortisol climbs across the back half of your night, so a four o'clock arousal drops you into a body already preparing to be awake. **Phosphatidylserine** is the compound with the most human work behind it for blunting a cortisol spike, and those trials measured stress and exercise rather than broken nights. It is filed in the memory aisle, priced for students, and aimed at nobody who is awake at four. QUICK QUESTION Is somebody else the reason your night gets broken? [YES](mailto:Claire%20Ashton%20%3Cmeloucou@gmail.com%3E?subject=Yes%20-%20Someone%20Else&body=Yes%2C%20here%27s%20who%20wakes%20me%20and%20how%20often.) [NO](mailto:Claire%20Ashton%20%3Cmeloucou@gmail.com%3E?subject=No%20-%20I%20Wake%20Alone&body=No%2C%20I%20wake%20up%20on%20my%20own.) Sleep well,Claire Ashton |
